Mason Crosby Jersey
Adaugat pe 18/09/2018 17:03:41
The New York Jets have claimed offensive tackle Antonio
Garcia off waivers from the New England Patriots and waived kicker Nick Rose.

Garcia was a third-round draft pick of the Patriots last year out of
Troy Mason Crosby
, but did not play because he was dealing with blood clots
in his lungs. New England placed him on the reserve/non-football injury list in
September and waived him last Friday.

The 6-foot-6, 302-pound Garcia told reporters in March that he was cleared to
return to football. He will add depth to the Jets' offensive line.

The Jets had claimed Rose off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers last
month. New York also has Cairo Santos on its roster and signed Taylor Bertolet
last week after he was a tryout during rookie minicamp.

Tom Brady has
accomplished just about everything when it comes to playing in the Super Bowl.

His five titles and four Super Bowl MVPs are more than any other quarterback.
He has posted the two biggest comeback wins in Super Bowl history, including
last year’s rally from 25 points down to beat Atlanta. He has thrown for more
yards or touchdowns than any quarterback on the biggest stage.

Perhaps the only accomplishment missing seems like a relatively simple one:
leading a first-quarter scoring drive.

In one of the more surprising Super Bowl stats, the Patriots have failed to
score a single point in the first quarter in their seven Super Bowl trips in the
Brady-Bill Belichick era.

”We’re trying to score every time we take the field,” Brady said. ”There’s a
little caveat to that in my opinion. In 2007, it was our first drive of the
game De'Anthony
Thomas Jersey
, it just happened to be the first play of the second

”But it was the first time we touched it. So we did score when we got it
first. But I’d love to score 21 points in the first quarter if we can but
obviously this defense can make it really tough for us.”

The Patriots did score on that first possession in their first meeting
against the Giants. But because New York held the ball for 9:59 to open the game
with a field-goal drive, Laurence Maroney’s 1-yard run came on the first play of
the second quarter.

The first-quarter scoring woes in the Super Bowl led to a memorable moment
from an NFL Network documentary about last year’s title of linebackers coach
Brian Flores addressing a banquet to honor the team.

”Coach Belichick, prior to the game, looked right at Tom Brady and goes `Tom,
we’ve been to six Super Bowls together, and we’ve never scored a point in the
first quarter. Can we get that done?”’ Flores told the crowd. ”I look around and
I go Wil Lutz
, `Man, we’re going to score 30 points in the first

Instead it didn’t happen. It was another first-quarter shutout as the
Patriots went three-and-out the first time they had the ball and then stalled
near midfield following two sacks on the second drive. The third drive ended
when LeGarrette Blount fumbled on the second play of the second quarter.

Brady has been on the field for a first-quarter score when his intentional
grounding penalty in the end zone against the Giants in 2012 led to a safety for
New York. That was one of four scores in the first quarter against the Patriots
in their seven trips with Belichick and Brady.

”Look, we try to score in every game,” Belichick said. ”I know that’s
probably hard to understand, but we try to go out and score and keep the other
team from scoring. That’s our goal every game.”

It’s not as if slow starts are a chronic problem for Brady and the Patriots.
Since his first season as the starter in 2001, New England leads the NFL on
first-quarter scoring with 5.7 points per game.

The Patriots are only a tick behind that at 5.5 points per first quarter in
the playoff rounds prior to the Super Bowl with Brady at quarterback.

But for some reason that all changes on the biggest stage Olivier
Vernon Jersey
, even though it hasn’t stopped the Patriots from
winning five Super Bowl titles.

”I would say that’s the emphasis every week,” receiver Phillip Dorsett said.
”We play better when we start fast, and that’s a big emphasis every week, not
just in the Super Bowl but in the weeks prior to this. I mean, we have a better
record when we’re playing fast and we get out to a good start, when we get
points on the board on that first drive. So Marcus Allen
, we always like to do that.”

The Latest on the NFL’s new policy requiring players to stand
if they are on the field during the national anthem but permitting them to stay
in the locker room if they prefer (all times EDT):

6 p.m.

Arizona Cardinals safety Antoine Bethea says the NFL’s new national anthem
policy is ”not really a compromise Jack Crawford
,” as touted by the league.

The 12-year NFL veteran noted that ”if you want to use your right of freedom
of speech and take a knee, you’re going to get fined. So it’s really not a

(In reality, the team, not the player, would be fined.)

Bethea noted that the NFL did give players the option of staying in the
locker room while the anthem is played.

”Either it’s going to be a team thing and everybody stays in the locker room
or everybody goes out and stands,” Bethea said. ”But I think the fine thing is
kind of overboard. I really do think fining players for really expressing what
they believe, I think that’s kind of overboard.

”It’s a club policy so if the club supports the guys to do as they wish, then
that’s fine, too. If the club decides everybody stays in the locker room, that’s
a decision every team has to make.”

The players’ union also dismissed the idea that the policy was a

”The NFL chose to not consult the union in the development of this new
`policy,”’ the NFLPA said in a statement.

5:40 p.m.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says he’s happy an agreement was
reached on the anthem issue.

Prescott says that ”I’ll be out there standing.” He added: ”I’m sure we all
know what (owner) Jerry (Jones) said. His statement was last year Alan Page
 , and I don’t see that changing.”

While there was never a formal public declaration of such by Jones last year,
the Cowboys owner had threatened to bench any players who did kneel.

During a Cowboys game at San Francisco in late October, about a half-dozen
49ers kneeled while all the Dallas players stood, though defensive tackle David
Irving raised his fist after the anthem ended.

5:30 p.m.

The Minnesota Vikings haven’t had any players kneel during the national
anthem before games, and that’s fine by coach Mike Zimmer.

Zimmer has frequently avoided commentary on such non-football subjects, but
on Wednesday after practice, he made his feelings known about the controversy.
He said he was proud of the team last season for standing during the anthem.

Zimmer said: ”I think it’s important we represent our country the right way.
A lot of people have died for that flag. That flag represents our country and
what we stand for.”

5:10 p.m.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Tyrod Taylor learned of the new anthem policy
shortly after practice. He was a bit surprised players were not consulted.

Taylor said that ”to make a decision that strong, you would hope the players
have input on it but obviously not.”

Taylor added that ”it’s what we have to deal with as players, good or bad.
But at the end of the day, they call the shots and make their rules and that’s
what we have to abide by.”

Taylor hopes that the focus will now be on ”what players and owners can do in
the community.”

4:45 p.m.

The New York Jets say they will pay any fines and not penalize players if
they violate a new NFL policy to stand or stay in the locker room during ”The
Star-Spangled Banner.”

Jets owner Christopher Johnson said Wednesday the team is focused on working
with players to advance social justice issues rather than creating club rules or
penalties that restrict demonstrations.

The ruling approved by NFL owners fines teams for their players kneeling on
the field during the national anthem in a move meant to stem widespread debate
over protests started by former quarterback Colin Kaepernick. The policy leaves
it up to individual teams to decide whether to pass that cost on by punishing
players directly.

Johnson says he plans to meet with Jets players and coaches to discuss the
decision. He says he’ll support the players ”wherever we land as a team.”

4:25 p.m.

Chicago Bears linebacker Sam Acho credits Colin Kaepernick, Eric Reid and
Michael Thomas for using their platform to raise awareness of social

But he sidestepped the questions when asked if he was OK with how the league
implemented the changes to its national anthem policy and whether the union
should have had more input.

Acho Brett Favre
, a union representative, said that ”of course, somebody who
is standing on the side of the union is going to say yes and people who didn’t
give the union a say – the owners – are going to say no. And so, what I do think
is, I think we’re in a really good place, as a team, honestly as a country.
Because we’re at this point, almost like a point of contrition, right? What do
you do now?”

Acho also said the players and league need to continue working together to
address the issue. He said that ”it’s not an us-versus-them thing.”

4 p.m.

Denver Broncos union representative Matt Paradis says that while he wishes
players were consulted on the new national anthem policy, NFL owners have every
right to introduce new rules.

Paradis says that ”they are the employers, so if they want to create a
stipulation Duke Dawson
 , we’ll go from there.”

Denver defensive end Derek Wolfe agrees with the league&# Tom Brady shook
off a hand injury and threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Danny Amendola with 2:48
remaining, rallying the New England Patriots back to the Super Bowl with a 24-20
comeback victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC championship game

Brady, wearing a black bandage on his right hand, showed no signs of being
hampered. And, with the game – and possibly the season – on the line, the
Patriots star came up big again.

Brady finished 26 of 38 for 290 yards and two touchdowns for the Patriots
(15-3), who’ll play Philadelphia in Minneapolis on Feb. 4.

The Jaguars (12-7) led 20-10 early in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t hold
against the defending champions.

Jacksonville – looking to reach the Super Bowl for the first time in
franchise history – had one more shot, but Blake Bortles’ throw on fourth-and-15
to Dede Westbrook was knocked away by Stephon Gilmore.

The Patriots then ran out the clock, with Dion Lewis’ 18-yard scamper with 90
seconds remaining sealing the victory. And they did it mostly without tight end
Rob Gronkowski, who left the game late in the first half and didn’t return.

made big play after big play, winning the NFC title in a stunning rout of

that beat them then, AFC champion New England.

Foles was on fire, throwing for 352 yards in a performance that might make
the Philadelphia faithful miss injured Carson Wentz a whole lot less.

Patrick Robinson’s spectacular 50-yard interception return got Philadelphia
(15-3) started. Then Foles and his offense tore up the league’s stingiest
scoring defense, with long TD throws to Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith.

LeGarrette Blount had an 11-yard scoring run when things were decided in the
first half, and the Eagles were headed to an NFL title game the Vikings (14-4)
hoped to be in at their own stadium.

Donald Penn Jersey
Adaugat pe 18/09/2018 01:45:23
With barely a week left until the season opens Donald Penn
, Browns coach Hue Jackson is still tinkering with his
offensive line.

Another shift could be coming.

During a conference call on Friday, Jackson raised the possibility that Joel
Bitonio could be on the move again. The team slid him from left guard to tackle
during training camp to fill the cavern created when perennial Pro Bowler Joe
Thomas retired following last season.

Jackson said Cleveland's line remains under construction just nine days
before the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town.

"Everything is a little bit fluid over there, especially on the left side as
we continue to move forward," he said. "I am going to say this again, I am going
to continue to put the best five guys out there."

When camp opened, the Browns had Shon Coleman, who started 16 games at right
tackle, lined up at left tackle. After line coach Bob Wylie said shifting
Bitonio to left tackle was "Plan Z," Jackson did it anyway and put rookie Austin
Corbett at left guard.

That's how the Browns played their first three exhibition games, and by all
accounts Bitonio held his own at a position he hadn't played since college. The
reviews on Corbett, the No. 33 overall draft pick this year Carl Banks
, were a little more mixed, and it's possible the Browns
aren't satisfied with his progress.

"I think that he has done some good things," Jackson said when asked
specifically about Corbett. "I have always said from Day 1 that we are going to
play the best five guys. How that unfolds as we go through preseason and as we
go through everything, we will make a decision about what we think is best."

The Browns did make a line move on Friday, trading Coleman to the San
Francisco 49ers for a seventh-round draft pick next season. Coleman was drafted
in the third round by the Browns in 2016.

Undrafted rookie Desmond Harrison started at left tackle in Thursday's
exhibition finale at Detroit and Jackson said the 6-foot-6, 295-pounder could be
in the mix. Harrison transferred from Texas and finished his college career at
West Georgia.

"All of those avenues are open," Jackson said. "I know we have seen Joel at
left tackle and he has played it, and Corbett at left guard and Harrison at left
tackle. When it is all said and done, my job is that we put the best five guys
out there, and that is what we are going to do."

Another option is former Arizona and Chicago lineman Earl Watford, who signed
with the Browns earlier this week. Watford has appeared in 43 NFL
games Laken
Tomlinson Jersey
, making 21 starts with the Cardinals. He played
both right and left guard last season.

Although things are unsettled up front, Jackson insists he's not worried.

"I feel good about where we are, where we are headed, and the players who we
have playing there," he said. "I just want to make sure that we are not turning
in the lineup cards today or to say who is starting or anything like that. I
just want to make sure that it is a decision, when it is all said and done, that
I am good with it all and that I am not going to change two days from now or
three days from now."

NOTES: Cleveland began trimming its roster ahead of Saturday's deadline. The
most notable cut was WR Jeff Janis, signed as a free agent in March after four
years with Green Bay. Janis was passed by several of Cleveland's young
receivers. Also released was fourth-string QB Brogan Roback, who got some
quality time on this season's "Hard Knocks" series. ... Jackson said WR Josh
Gordon will return to practice Monday. The former Pro Bowler missed the first
three weeks of camp while receiving treatment in Florida connected to his drug
and alcohol addictions. He's been slowed by a hamstring injury since being
cleared by the NFL to resume all activities.

Al Horford had no use for the
premature celebration that showered confetti all over the 76ers’ home court at
the end of regulation, delaying overtime and prompting an impromptu cleanup job.

Turns out, Horford has the Celtics just a game away from a real sweep.

”These are the kind of moments you want to be in as a basketball player,”
Horford said.

He saw some wild ones down the stretch.

Marco Belinelli had hit a buzzer-beater to end the fourth quarter that sent
the Sixers into a wild celebration on the court as confetti shot out of a cannon
that made it rain over chunks of the arena.

Hold up.

Game 3 was only headed into OT.

The Celtics, who rallied from a 22-point deficit to beat the 76ers 108-103 in
Game 2, can advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the second straight
season on Monday.

The ending to regulation was about as wild as it gets for both teams. JJ
Redick threw away the basketball on an errant pass to no one that was scooped by
Terry Rozier who threw to Jaylen Brown for the basket and an 89-87 lead.

Seconds later, Belinelli stunned everyone with a falling 22-footer in front
of the 76ers bench as time expired that sent the game into overtime – and
confetti mistakenly blasted from the cannon. There was about a seven-minute
delay while team employees scrambled to clean up the mess on the court. Some
players even scooped up confetti as everyone waited for the start of

Confetti Guy – wearing a ”Breaking News: I Don’t Care” T-shirt – pushed the
button too early and the rectangular pieces were soaring everywhere.

Confetti Guy – who declined to give his name – came over to press row and
said the Sixers ”better win or I’m done.”

They didn’t.

Belinelli opened OT with a 23-footer and Redick followed with a 3 that
appeared to take him off the hook.

But the Celtics wouldn’t let them pull away and Horford escaped for a layup
with 5.5 seconds that gave Boston a 99-98 lead. Ben Simmons then threw the ball
away after a timeout and Horford sealed the win with two free throws.

Sixers coach Brett Brown said he thought Belinelli had won the game with a

”Walk off 3. I thought it was. I actually left the court,” he said. ”You come
back on and there’s confetti. You move on. It slows the game down a lot but you
move on.”

Jayson Tatum scored 24 points and Rozier had 18.

Joel Embiid had 22 points and 19 rebounds for the Sixers, Redick scored 18
and Simmons 16.

Horford hit the big shots in the final minute of overtime to silence what had
been a rabid crowd. Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles rang the ceremonial bell and
whipped the crowd into a frenzy. One fan waved a sign that said ”Philly Special
2.0” as a nod to the trick play called that allowed Foles to catch a touchdown
pass against the New England Patriots.

But not every Philly team can beat one from New England in a big game.

Simmons, the rookie of the year favorite, had a miserable Game 2 and scored
only one point and failed to score a field goal for the first time all year.
Hall of Famer Allen Iverson called Simmons and gave him a needed pick-me-up.

”Just play the game I’ve been playing,” Simmons said AI told him. ”I know how
to play the game. I can’t think about it too much. I’ve just got to go out there
and do it.”

Determined not to get embarrassed again Derek Watt
, Simmons scored on a driving layup less than a minute into
the game.

”My goal isn’t to go out there and drop 30 every game,” Simmons said. ”My
goal is to go out there and facilitate and get the best shots we can.”

He did it all in the second quarter when the Sixers looked every bit the team
that ended the season on a 16-game win streak.

Trailing by 10 early in the second, Simmons had an emphatic slam to kickstart
a rally. Simmons would make the highlight reel with a behind-the-back pass to a
charging Embiid for a thunderous dunk over Aron Baynes. Embiid made the free
throw and the crowd was going bonkers.

Redick and Dario Saric each hit 3s during the 13-0 run that helped the Sixers
take a 51-48 lead into halftime.

76ers: The Sixers have suddenly become one of the hottest teams at attracting
celebrities. Rapper Meek Mill, Questlove of The Roots, celebrity physician Dr.
Oz, UFC President Dana White and director M. Night Shyamalan were all at the
game, as were other members of the Eagles.

Celtics: The Celtics missed 15 of 22 3s in the first half and only attempted
four free throws.

Embiid was just 2 of 3 from the free-throw line and believed he was hacked
most of the game.

”I’m too big not to get fouled every time I go to the basket,” he said.

Coach Brett Brown endorsed assistant coach Lloyd Pierce as the next head
coach of the Atlanta Hawks. Pierce interviewed for the job on Friday.

”It’s a no-brainer. I would hire Lloyd Pierce yesterday,” Brown said.

Game 4 is Monday at the only-in-the-postseason tip time of 6 p.m. EDT

Stephen Curry watched another lopsided win from the bench in
sheer delight Robert Quinn
, wearing a sport coat and big smile.

The steady hands of Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson certainly have made the
two-time MVP’s absence far less daunting for the defending champions so far in
these playoffs.

Durant sparked a decisive third-quarter run on the way to 32 points, Thompson
added 31 points and five assists in another superb playoff performance and the
Golden State Warriors rallied in the second half to beat the San Antonio Spurs
116-101 on Monday night for a 2-0 lead in their first-round series.

As Curry remains out likely for the entire series nursing a sprained left
knee, the Warriors used all the offensive power they had to take both home games
in the best-of-seven series.

”No one can make up Steph’s contributions individually,” Thompson said.
”That’s got to be done as a team and even then it’s hard with the way he can
shoot the ball.”

Thompson has found his touch after missing two weeks in March with a broken
right thumb.

He followed up his brilliant 11-for-13 shooting day in a 113-92 Game 1 rout
Saturday by hitting 12 of 20 shots. Durant also had six rebounds and six assists
for the Warriors, who went without key backup big man David West down the
stretch after he sprained his left ankle early in the fourth.

Coach Steve Kerr stuck with JaVale McGee as his starting center and the
7-footer contributed 10 points and seven rebounds as the well-rounded defending
champions again showed off their remarkable depth.

LaMarcus Aldridge scored 34 for the Spurs despite facing double-teams and
Rudy Gay moved into the starting lineup and scored 12 points.

Game 3 is Thursday as the series shifts to San Antonio.

Thompson managed just three shots in the first quarter and began 1 for 5. He
pounded the basketball down with two hands, frustrated, midway through the
second quarter. Then he found his groove.

”He hit some tough shots off one leg and you know had some opportunity
bounces,” Aldridge said. ”That’s why they are who they are. They made tough
shots. KD made tough shots.”

A baseline 3 with 55.9 seconds left before halftime was his first of the
night and got Golden State within 49-45 before the Spurs took a 53-47 lead at

Draymond Green began 0 for 5 before his first basket on the opening
possession of the fourth quarter and Durant missed his five 3-point tries in the
first half then finally hit from deep early in the third.

The Warriors opened the third on a 19-5 run to take charge but this time the
Spurs didn’t go away.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich went with Gay in the starting lineup for Kyle
Anderson in an effort to generate more scoring – and his team still struggled to
make shots.

Popovich said before the game that Golden State in Game 1 played ”the most
stifling defense we faced all year long. That was the best defensive 48 minutes
that we have competed against all year long.”

Kerr knew Popovich would have his team better prepared.

And the Spurs showed higher intensity on both ends through the first half,
working to keep the ball out of Durant’s hands or contest shots while jumping in
passing lanes to force mistakes.

Andre Iguodala, the 2015 Finals MVP, started a second straight game and had
14 points, seven rebounds and five assists as the Warriors beat the Spurs for
the 10th time in 11 games covering the regular season and playoffs.

San Antonio struggled from the floor for the second straight game, finishing
35 for 85 (41.2 percent). In Game 1, the Spurs shot 40 just percent while going
9 for 22 from deep and got outrebounded 51-30.

Nikola Mirotic watched his third 3-pointer of the first half swish through

triumphantly as he trotted back up court.

Portland had a hard enough time dealing with Pelicans All-Star Anthony Davis

credit to my teammates. … It’s just about the team. It’s about winning.”

To illustrate how hard New Orleans has been to defend in the series, Portland
coach Terry Stotts made a point of noting that Mirotic was the third different
Pelicans player to score 30 in a game. Davis had 35 in Game 1 and Holiday 33 in
Game 2.

”New Orleans played extremely well,” Stotts said. ”We arguably had one of our
worst games of the year, so it was a bad combination.”

Davis had 28 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two blocks for New

time since 2008 with one more victory. Game 4 is Saturday.

The 6-foot-10 Mirotic, acquired in a midseason trade after DeMarcus Cousins‘
season-ending Achilles tear, made 12 of 15 shots, scoring on everything from

”They’re making me give the ball up,” Lillard said. ”This is a different
coverage than I’ve seen at any point in my career. … It’s two or three layers of
defense. It’s tough to play against, man.”

CJ McCollum scored 22 and Al-Farouq Aminu added 21, but Portland trailed by
double digits for most of the first half and all of the second.

The Blazers had no answer for a Pelicans offense orchestrated once again to
prolific effect by Rondo, who had 16 points and 11 assists – giving him 37
assists in the series. Holiday added 16 points for New Orleans, which shot 53
percent (46 of 87).

Pelicans: Cousins was on the bench, attending his first game in New Orleans
since his injury on Jan. 26. When he was shown cheering on his teammates on the

The Pelicans wore alternate red uniforms and every fan was given a matching

The volume was high early with the crowd revved up for the first playoff game
in New Orleans since 2015.

The Blazers did nothing to silence the place Will Lutz
, shooting about 35 percent and committing six turnovers in
the opening quarter.

New Orleans raced to an 18-point lead in the period, aided by Mirotic hitting
five of his first seven shots for 14 early points.

Mirotic scored 21 by halftime, which already represented a playoff career

Davis joined the fray with his typical array of alley-oop dunks, one of which
he caught with his back to the basket and threw down with a two-handed reverse

Rondo ran New Orleans’ offense with a tempo that gave Portland fits, and even
when he was forced to settle for a deep 3 late in the shot clock, it went down,
pushing the Pelicans’ lead to 20 in the first half.

Portland never got closer than 13 after that and trailed by as many as 33 in

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said he’s not sure Mirotic’s decision to shave
his beard had anything to do with his recent surge in production, but said the

Pelicans have an opportunity to complete the first playoff series sweep in

Richie Incognito tells The Associated Press he's back home

, two weeks after the former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman
spent three days in a mental hospital following an alleged outburst at a south
Florida gym.

Without discussing the outburst, Incognito wrote in a text to The AP on
Wednesday that he is still pursuing continuing his NFL career for a 12th season.
He focused a majority of his message thanking friends and fans for their
support, and specifically singled out former teammate, center Eric Wood.

Incognito referred to Wood as a pillar of the community and added: "When I
would have a dark day, he was a bright shining light that helped me through. I
owe him a lot."

Incognito also thanked the Bills and team owners Terry and Kim Pegula for
providing him an opportunity to resurrect his career. The Bills signed Incognito
in January 2015 after he spent 18 months out of football following his role in
the Miami Dolphins' bullying scandal.

He referred to his three seasons in Buffalo as being some of his fondest

Incognito then closed his message by saying he hopes to sign with another
team so that he can come back to Buffalo to beat the Bills, before adding a
smiling face emoji wearing sunglasses.

The 34-year-old Incognito has had a tumultuous offseason.

Two weeks ago, police placed Incognito in a mental hospital after he
allegedly threw weights and tennis balls at gym employees and another patron,
and told officers the government is spying on him.

In April, Incognito abruptly fired his agent and then retired by posting a
note on Twitter before having a change of heart. The Bills granted his request
to be released to potentially sign with another team on May 21.

The massive
hole on the left side of Cleveland's offensive line may be shrinking.

Needing to find a replacement at tackle following the retirement of perennial
Pro Bowler Joe Thomas, the Browns used the first pick in the second round of the
NFL draft Friday night on Nevada's Austin Corbett, a walk-on who turned into a
four-year college starter and is versatile enough to play three positions.

The 307-pounder close friends with Browns guard Joel Bitonio, who played
alongside Thomas for several years and told Corbett about the person and player
he could replace.

"As far as it goes in being 'the next Joe Thomas,' that is just a
rare Drew Brees
, rare human there," Corbett said. "If I can learn from him
and follow in his footsteps, that's just amazing."

Two picks after getting Corbett, the Browns used the No. 35 overall selection
on bruising Georgia running back Nick Chubb, who ran for 1,345 yards last
season, two years after suffering a knee injury.

The pick was announced by Browns legend Jim Brown, the franchise's all-time
leading rusher.

"I have no questions about this guy," said vice president of player personnel
Alonzo Highsmith, who compared Chubb to former All-Pro Jamal Lewis. "Just give
him the ball."

The Browns traded their third second-round pick, No. 64 overall, to
Indianapolis for the No. 67 pick and took Miami defensive end Chad Thomas.
Cleveland also received a sixth-round pick from the Colts.

If football doesn't pan out, Thomas has a music career to fall back on. He
plays nine instruments and has produced for hip-hop artists Tyler
Lockett Jersey
 , including Rick Ross.

For the Browns, the first two days have provided a chance to bolster a roster
that failed to produce a win last season. They've been bold, taking quarterback
Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 pick, and feel much better about their future.

"The main thing is that we have improved," said assistant general manager
Eliot Wolf. "You set out to improve every single day. We feel like we have done
that. Obviously, if we go out and do not win a game, then none of this means
anything. Anyone can win in March or April."

As the league's lowest scoring team last season, the Browns needed
playmakers. Chubb gives them another and he joins a running back group that
includes free-agent signee Carlos Hyde and Duke Johnson, Cleveland's best
offensive player last season.

At 227 pounds, Chubb can run inside and he's quick enough to turn the corner
for a big gain. He scored 15 touchdowns last season finished his career with
4,769 yards, second in SEC history to Herschel Walker.

"When you play running back in the SEC, you have to be able to create between
the tackles with your feet and you have to be able to play a physical style of
football Charles Clay
, and Nick Chubb exemplifies all of that in his running
style," Highsmith said. "Not only is he a great football player, he's a
tremendous person, tremendous individual, tremendous leader and he exemplifies
what we're trying to build here in Cleveland."

Corbett fits that mold as well.

He was undersized when enrolling at Nevada, but inspired by his brother who
played at San Diego State, he worked his way into getting a scholarship and
eventually drafted by the Browns.

"No D-I program wants a 240-pound offensive lineman. My brother at the time
was playing at San Diego State," he said. "He was on scholarship so he kind of
set the bar for me. If he can play D-I, then so can I.

"Then I just got the opportunity to walk on at the local college here at
Nevada. That was the only way I could play D-I. Financially, that was the only
way so it made sense for us. It is just a difference in how you have to go about
yourself when you are a walk-on."

The Browns plan to move right tackle Shon Coleman to the left side, but he
could be challenged for the starting job by Corbett.

"If Austin is able to be the left tackle, it would be great," Wolf said.

The 6-foot-5 Davonte

, 275-pound Thomas started for two seasons with the
Hurricanes, recording 10 sacks.

Andrew Berry, another of the team's player personnel vice presidents, feels
Thomas can have an immediate impact as a rookie.

"We thought he was one of the most physical defensive linemen in the draft,"
Berry said. "We think he's a very talented, strong, athletic defensive lineman
who can play multiple spots along our front. He is a player when we talk about
setting the edge or keeping contained in the run-game, he can really put on a
clinic tape of being able to do that at one of the end spots.

"He is just a strong, long, physical guy that uses his hands

Adaugat pe 17/09/2018 01:35:12
A salary-cap squeeze threatened to slam the Washington
Capitals‘ Stanley Cup window shut. Instead A.J. Klein
, it busted it wide open.

When the dollars didn’t add up to be able to keep a handful of key
contributors to back-to-back Presidents’ Trophy-winning teams, the Capitals went
bargain hunting to sign bought-out winger Devante Smith-Pelly, who general
manager Brian MacLellan termed a ”project.” Up against the cap at the trade
deadline, they acquired lightly used defenseman Michal Kempny from Chicago.

”Some of the best acquisitions are ones that are under the radar, ones that
fit almost seamlessly,” coach Barry Trotz said. ”Some of the best deals that
we’ve made are those ones that, even myself I’m like, `Hmm, that’s a little bit
of an upgrade, not a big one.’ And they ended up being the biggest upgrades
because they’re not sexy names.”

Kempny said ”probably nobody knew my name when I came here or played in
Chicago,” and Smith-Pelly had his name on the back of three other NHL teams’
jerseys before this season. Now they’re key pieces for a team one win from the
Stanley Cup after the Capitals hit on exactly the kind of moves every
championship contender is looking to make.

All it cost was a one-year deal at the league minimum to sign Smith-Pelly
after he was bought out by the Devils, and a third-round pick to get Kempny from
the Blackhawks. Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Braden Holtby have led
Washington to this point, up 3-1 on the Vegas Golden Knights with the chance to
raise the Cup after Game 5 on Thursday night. But they wouldn’t be here without
the contributions of Smith-Pelly and Kempny.

After a seven-goal regular season Ray-Ray
Armstrong Jersey
, Smith-Pelly has six goals in the playoffs,
including potential series daggers in Games 3 and 4 of the final. This isn’t
exactly where the 25-year-old thought he’d be just under a year ago when he
found out a minute before the buyout deadline that the Devils were cutting

”You only get so many chances to stick,” said Smith-Pelly, a 2010
second-round pick who bounced from Anaheim to Montreal to New Jersey, never
putting up more than 17 points in a season. ”I knew that this could be my last
one, so I kind of took the buyout personally and listened to what the coaching
staff had to say and what they wanted, and just went out there and did it.”

Smith-Pelly wasn’t even guaranteed a roster spot when he signed. He developed
into a teammate on and off the ice that helped propel the Capitals to another
division title despite losing forwards Justin Williams, Marcus Johansson and
Daniel Winnik, and defensemen Nate Schmidt, Karl Alzner and Kevin Shattenkirk
last summer. He was the Capitals’ Masterton Trophy nominee for perseverance and
dedication to hockey after taking an incident of racist ”basketball, basketball,
basketball” taunts and turning it into a positive when he facilitated money be
donated to Fort Dupont Ice Arena in Washington.

”What happened was obviously pretty negative,” Smith-Pelly said. ”But for the
people of Chicago to feel that they needed to donate money and for me to give it
to Fort Dupont I thought turned a pretty bad thing into something that could
change many kids’ lives in that area.”

Smith-Pelly always seems to find the positive. He brushed off a puck to the
face at the morning skate Monday and scored a back-breaking goal that night.

Kempny has done the same. Stepping on a puck during pregame warmups led to a
spill and stitches across the bridge of his nose, but the 27-year-old missed no
time. He then pumped in a Game 4 goal that helped put the Capitals on the verge
of winning the Cup.

It’s the latest impact Kempny has made on his new team after fitting in as a
top-four defenseman alongside John Carlson.

”He played big minutes against top players Brent
Grimes Jersey
, be it the (Evgeni) Malkins and the (Sidney)
Crosbys, and he’s done a really good job,” Trotz said.” He’s just one of those
players that is effective – efficient, effective, gets it done. You’re not going
to see a lot of offense. He’s got some great looks, though. You talk about a guy
who’s developing maybe from more of a stay-at-home type of defenseman to a guy
who recognizes opportunity.”

This is the opportunity Kempny had been waiting for after being a
third-pairing defenseman with the Blackhawks, and sometimes a healthy scratch.
Coach Joel Quenneville wasn’t a fan, so the Capitals made a deal arguably more
meaningful than Evander Kane to San Jose, Paul Stastny to Winnipeg, or Ryan
McDonagh and J.T. Miller to Tampa Bay.

”Adding Kempny helped a lot,” MacLellan said. ”I think we had him projected
right. He’s a good skater, a good puck mover. I know he was not always in the
lineup in Chicago, but he was our No. 1 target going into the trade

Carlson watched video of Kempny’s games to get an understanding of his new
defense partner. Kempny had to regain his confidence after feeling like the
”last warm body on the bench.”

”When you are not playing, you can’t be a better player. It’s
impossible Josh
Robinson Jersey
,” Kempny said. ”I never played in Chicago against
top lines. I didn’t know if I could play against them or not. But I got a chance
here, so I proved to myself that I can play against top lines.”

The Capitals have shown they can play against and beat anyone, with
Smith-Pelly and Kempny proving to be perfect pieces for a team eying a

”Everything’s worked out very well,” Smith-Pelly said. ”If we end up winning,
that would b For most of the past month, Doug Baldwin has been a spectator as he
dealt with a sore left knee that kept him from participating in Seattle Seahawks

It may be how Baldwin and the Seahawks end up managing most of the upcoming
season for Seattle's No. 1 wide receiver.

"I'm probably about 80-85 percent right now and the truth of the matter is it
won't be 100 percent," Baldwin said. "It's something I've got to deal with for
the rest of the season."

At least Baldwin is back on the field and showing signs of progress. He won't
play in the preseason finale Thursday against Oakland, but the expectation is
that he will be ready for the regular-season opener Sept. 9 at Denver. The month
of waiting to get back into practice has been difficult for Baldwin to

"To be out this long ... it was hard. It was hard emotionally. It was good to
be back out there," he said.

The team has offered few specifics about Baldwin's knee. Coach Pete Carroll
simply called it a sore knee. Baldwin was coy when asked if he's undergone
surgery, saying, "It depends on your definition of surgery."

Whatever the full extent, it's clear the issue is something Seattle will have
to manage with rest if it expects to have Baldwin for the entire season.

"It will be something we have to manage throughout the course of the year. It
will be day to day," Baldwin said.

Baldwin practiced two days at the start of camp before becoming a spectator
and spending more time in the training room than on any field. He said the knee
issue emerged during the first week of OTAs in the spring and he did not
participate in the team's mandatory minicamp in June.

Once he realized the knee wasn't responding as he hoped at the start of camp,
it became a race to see if he could be ready for the start of the season.

"The first two days of camp realized it wasn't where we wanted it to be in
order for me to sustain the level of play 12th Fan
, being able to express myself athletically, that I want
to," Baldwin said. "So it was time to do something more serious."

Baldwin is coming off a down season by his standards. He had 75 catches, 991
yards and eight touchdowns in 2017 as Seattle's overall offense took a step
back. A year earlier, Baldwin had a career-best 94 receptions, and in 2016 he
had 14 touchdown catches.

He understands his role in Seattle's offense may be different this year with
the addition of new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and a wide
receiver group that includes newcomers Brandon Marshall and Jaron Brown. Not
being able to be part of training camp has made the transition to the new
offense a bit tougher.

"Obviously I would have liked to have some game reps and more practice
because I am a rep guy and especially now with the new offense," Baldwin said.
"I would like to get the physical reps, especially with the quarterback trying
to get that chemistry and build that rapport. I've been playing football since I
was little. It's really not that much different for me. I've been in the league
now going on eight years, at this point it should be like riding a

Kocurek’s voice will give out, and perhaps they wish it would.

Kocurek is in his first year as the defensive line coach, and he operates
with high expectations at high energy and volume.

”I’ve got to watch where I stand on the field with him,” defensive
coordinator Matt Burke said following Thursday’s practice. ”Sometimes he’s right
there, and I get an earful. … People think it’s an act, and it’s not. That’s

Coach Adam Gase lured Kocurek out of Detroit, where he had been the Lion’

four will be better this year.

”Kris has done a really good job of getting to those guys,” Gase said. ”They

While Kocurek can be hard on his players, he also knows how hard the game can
be. The 39-year-old Texas native played at Texas Tech, and after he was drafted
in the seventh round, his NFL career lasted one game and four snaps – for
Tennessee in 2001.

”It was a goal-line situation,” he said. ”They stuck me in there, and I just
tried to get as low as I could. We actually held them out of there.”

After a fifth shoulder operation ended his career, he turned to coaching and
reached the NFL as a Lions assistant in 2009. When Detroit coach Jim Caldwell
was fired in January, Kocurek came to Miami.

”I had the same office for nine years, and all of a sudden you get thrown
into a little bit different environment,” he said. ”But it has been great. I
look forward to cranking my truck in the morning and getting to work as fast as
I can.”

He’s working with perhaps the team’s deepest unit. While Suh is gone, Miami
acquired two-time Pro Bowl end Robert Quinn. Holdovers include ends Cameron
Wake, Andre Branch and Charles Harris, and tackles Jordan Phillips, Vincent
Taylor and Davon Godchaux.

Kocurek yells at all of them.

Burke said Kocurek’s passionate approach is a good match for the area he

”People might get mad at me for saying this: I think the bigger you get, the
more motivated you’ve got to get from somebody externally,” Burke said. ”With
that group, it takes a little extra yelling and pushing.”

Wake, for one, loves Kocurek’s approach.

”He’s a guy that’s old school, hard-nosed,” Wake said. ”He’s demanding. He
doesn’t bite he tongue. He tells you how it is. … I love it. It’s a man’s game
and there is no room for softness, especially the d-line. This is not
quarterbacks, this is not receivers.”

But will Kocurek’s voice make it through training camp?

”No,” Wake said. ”It has already taken a hit. He’s going to have to get some
tea or some honey.”

The Colorado Rockies have been getting contributions from the top to the
bottom of their lineup.

Especially the bottom.

The Rockies got three RBIs from their No. 9 hitter for the second consecutive

streak to five games.

They’ll go for the sweep Sunday afternoon at Safeco Field, where right-hander
Antonio Senzatela (3-1 Marcus Allen
, 4.44 ERA) takes on Seattle left-hander Wade LeBlanc (4-0,

On Friday, catcher Tony Wolters had two triples and three RBIs from the ninth
spot as the Rockies won 7-1. On Saturday, rookie right fielder Noel Cuevas had
three hits, including a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning off
Mariners ace James Paxton.

“That’s what happens when you go on a little run of wins. The contributions
are coming from multiple guys, whether it’s bench players or the guy getting the
start. … You’re going to get tired of hearing me say that it’s going to take 25
guys, but it’s truly the case,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “We can’t just
rely on our main guys. This team is in a good spot. I like how we are kind of
coming together with this group and we have to continue.”

The top three batters in the Rockies’ order — DJ LeMahieu, Charlie Blackmon
and Nolan Arenado — combined to go 0-for-14 with seven strikeouts on Saturday.
But the bottom three — Pat Valaika, Gerardo Parra and Cuevas — had seven of the
team’s 10 hits.

“It’s a team sport; definitely today was the example,” Cuevas said. “The top
of the order didn’t have the day that it wanted. We were able to get out with a
‘W,’ because the bottom of the order did their job.”

Cuevas’ homer, the second of his career, came one pitch after he failed to
get down a squeeze bunt.

“I wasn’t happy at that moment that I missed it (the bunt) — we were trying
to get that run in Peyton

I missed it. So what? Next pitch, I can’t remember that I just missed the bunt.
I need to be ready for that pitch. That was it.”

Right-hander German Marquez and left-hander Kyle Freeland gave up one solo
home run apiece in the first two games of the series. Freeland was gone by the
time Cuevas homered Saturday, making a winner of reliever Scott Oberg.

“The bullpen is doing a nice job, but it starts with starting pitching,
keeping us in games and doing their job,” Black said. “We will be at it (Sunday)

Mariners right fielder Mitch Haniger returned to the lineup Saturday after
missing two games with a sprained right knee, but second baseman Dee Gordon was
limited to pinch-hitting duties after tweaking his hip Friday night. And catcher
Mike Zunino is on the 10-day disabled list with a bruised left ankle.

“We’re a little banged up right now,” said Mariners manager Scott Servais,
whose team had won nine of 10 games entering the series. “It happens. It’s part
of what you go through in a long season like this.”

Senzatela faced the Mariners once as a rookie last season, a 5-0 loss at
Safeco Field. He went five innings and allowed four runs, five hits and two
walks with seven strikeouts.

LeBlanc is 2-3 with a 6.53 ERA in nine career appearances (seven starts)

PITTSFORD Tahir Whitehead Jersey , N.Y. (AP) — New Buffalo Bills wide receiver Corey Coleman can’t escape reminders of Cleveland no matter how hard he’s tried to put his two seasons with the Browns in the past.

First, there was the second episode of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series on Tuesday, which detailed how a frustrated Coleman demanded the Browns trade him. And then on Friday, the 2016 first-round draft pick is expected to make his Bills debut in a preseason game at Cleveland.

“Hey, it’s going to be weird. But I’m not out there anymore,” Coleman said. “I’m just treating it like any other game.”

As for TV cameras capturing his final days with the Browns, Coleman said he didn’t watch the episode but friends sent him clips. One features Coleman in his vehicle exiting the Browns’ parking lot for the last time and saying: “Adios, Cleveland.”

“It is what it is. Nothing really to explain,” Coleman told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

He added he bears “no hard feelings” toward the Browns.

Coleman appeared to have different feelings a few weeks ago when cameras filmed him entering Browns coach Hue Jackson’s office and questioning why he was demoted to practicing with the second stringers.

Jackson told Coleman to ask offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Coleman responded by saying: “If you don’t want me to play, why don’t you all just trade me?”

Coleman confirmed to the AP that he asked the Browns to trade him. In a sign of how far Coleman’s stock has fallen since being drafted with the No. 15 pick out of Baylor, Buffalo had to give up only a 2020 seventh-round selection to acquire him on Aug. 5.

The 24-year-old will be best remembered in Cleveland for two injury-shortened seasons and far too many dropped passes. The worst occurred late in the fourth quarter of last season’s finale at Pittsburgh that sealed the Browns’ 0-16 finish.

Coleman caught 56 of the 131 passes thrown in his direction for 718 yards and five touchdowns in 19 games.

In Buffalo, he joins an offense in transition, featuring a new coordinator, Brian Daboll Corey Linsley Jersey , and a three-way quarterback competition, including rookie first-round pick Josh Allen.

It’s also an offense that lacks proven receivers behind starter Kelvin Benjamin.

Coleman’s first challenge is learning a new playbook and building chemistry with the three quarterbacks.

He’s not made much of a splash during his first week of practice, splitting time mostly with the second- and third-stringers.

On Wednesday, Coleman drew cheers when making an arms-outstretched leaping catch deep up the left sideline, only to have one foot land out of bounds. Before one snap during practice Tuesday, an offensive assistant went up to Coleman and directed him where to line up.

On the plus side, Coleman spends time working after practice and is usually among the last players off the field.

Coach Sean McDermott’s intention for Friday is to see how much Coleman can handle, as opposed to easing him in.

“We’re getting to the point now where it needs to be the former in terms of: ‘Here’s the playbook. You’ve got to know it,'” McDermott said. “The biggest thing is that we want him to come out, play fast, and play physical.”

Daboll said he has no preconceptions toward Coleman based on what happened in Cleveland.

“I just go by what I see,” Daboll said. “He works hard. He’s on time. He asks good questions.”

Coleman’s approach hasn’t changed since arriving at Bills camp saying he’s looking forward to a fresh start and wants to be measured by how he responds to what happened in Cleveland.

“Don’t take a day out here for granted,” Coleman said this week. “My main goal is getting better and helping the Buffalo Bills win.”

NOTES: The Bills had no update on Benjamin, who practiced on a limited basis for a second consecutive day. … DE Trent Murphy has been sidelined by a groin injury for a second time in three weeks and is expected to miss his second consecutive preseason game. … The Bills broke camp in suburban Rochester Andrew Sendejo Jersey , New York, on Wednesday and will resume practice at their headquarters on Sunday.

Jon Cooper searched for adequate words to describe the feeling of coming within one victory of playing for the Stanley Cup.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have done it twice in the past three years. And it hurts.

”It’s everything from agonizing to angry to disappointed to shock,” the coach said Thursday, less than 24 hours after one of the most successful seasons in franchise history came to a screeching halt with a 4-0 loss to Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final.

”I’m sure that’s going to turn into proud and happy for our group,” he added. ”There are so many good emotions about coaching this team … but the emotions of how it ended is tough.”

After compiling the best record in the Eastern Conference during the regular season, eliminating the New Jersey Devils and Boston Bruins in the first two rounds of the playoffs, and rebounding from losing the first games of the conference final to take a 3-2 series lead, the Lightning truly believed this was their year.

Now, general manager Steve Yzerman and Cooper face decisions about what needs to be tweaked.

The Lightning won Game 7 of the conference final against the Rangers in 2015, advancing to the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in franchise history. They made it back to the East final, only to lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins in seven games two years ago.

”If anybody sits and says it was an unsuccessful season, I have to question that. You look back at this team. All the accomplishments of the regular season, and then to be one game away from getting to the Stanley Cup Final,” Cooper said Patrick Mahomes II Jersey , his voice trailing off.

”Now it’s just solving that piece of the puzzle,” the coach added, ”getting over the top.”

With a talented roster that’s both deep and fairly young, there won’t be wholesale changes.

Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy, a Vezina Trophy finalist in his first full season as a starter, is just 23 years old.

Leading scorer Nikita Kucherov is 24, Norris Trophy finalist Victor Hedman is 27, and emerging star Brayden Point is just 22.

Even captain Steven Stamkos, completing his 10th NHL season, is only 28.

”What were we missing? A couple of goals in Game 7,” Cooper said. ”You can sit here and pick apart all you want of what went wrong, it was one game. We didn’t score and we lost the game. They were opportunistic and scored, and they advanced. … It’s razor-thin how close this league is.”

Yzerman said there are a number of areas where the Lightning need to get better moving forward, including defensively.

The GM Joe Hawley Jersey , however, rejected the notion that somehow the season was a failure because a team with such high expectations didn’t get back to the championship round.

”It’s really difficult to win the Stanley Cup, and if you’re going to measure every year strictly on it’s a failure if we win or not, I don’t think I look at it that way,” Yzerman said.

”There’s a process and there’s no definitive timeline for it. Just continue to improve, continue to hang around, I guess, and we’re going to win one of these things,” the GM added. ”It’s not a failure. It’s a disappointment at this stage, but we’re not sitting here saying we’re the best team by a mile. We realize there’s a bunch of good teams out there, a group of teams that could win the Stanley Cup.”

Cooper said one thing it’s important to not do this summer is over-react.

”It’s hard to explain just how hard it is to get here,” the coach said. ”There are 30 teams who are going to get Monday morning quarterbacked, and one team that is not. You just have to build on your strengths and keep getting better and come back next year stronger than ever.”
